I guess I really can’t blame them as they are young and clueless, but the events of the last few days have left me wondering what they were thinking, if anything.
Yesterday I was freezing and found that my heater was only getting the indoor temp to about 55 degrees. This morning as I was performing the morning toilette I discovered that I didn’t have any water. I went down to the basement to grab some water out of a hot water heater and found the source of all of the problems. It seems that when they used the laundry facilities in the basement last week mthey didn’t shut the door completely and it blew open.
The pipes were frozen, hence the lack of water. The air in the basement was obviously quite cold which explains why my heater was ineffective (that, and the filter hasn’t been changed since June 2014...) Their heater is upstairs so they didn’t experience the same problem. It’s usually quite comfortable in the basement, something I couldn’t say today.
Since they are quite young they probably have no idea what the problems were nor would they have any clue how to fix them. I thawed out the pipes to get the water flowing again, yanked the filthy filter until I can get a replacement, and have placed a space heater down there to get the temp back to normal (and since it’s under my portion of the house it should make my place a little more comfortable without costing me anything). It was warmer today, which helped, and now the water is flowing and my heater actually got the place up to a nice toasty 63 degrees...

That’s the first time I’ve seen pex burst due to freezing. That picture and the title made me think some young children were playing with knives or something.
And it could have been an honest mistake. More times than I care to admit I’ve watched my own door blow open because I failed to close it quite far enough to engage the latch.

Would you be interested in one of the door closing arms? There are some in the demo building I’m working in this week.

That was just a random picture found online; thankfully the pipes didn’t actually burst, but from what I’ve read it is a possibility.
Keeping the basement door closed has been a problem and you do have to give it a good pull to get it to latch. There are simple rules to follow indicated inside of the basement and told to every tenant (close the door, turn the lights out, latch the gate) that often don’t get followed, and in many cases the ramifications of not following them is not known to the violators.
These are the same people that think everything is acceptable unless told otherwise and just to knock on their door of ever there’s an issue. I try to be a good and respectful neighbor and don’t want to come across as a complainer, but they’ve moved the burden of responsibility from themselves onto others by doing this.
I don’t really like the idea of getting up at 1 in the morning, going downstairs then outside into the snow to tell them to turn down the stereo, for example. Or telling them to clean the dog shit off of the stairs and lawn in this “no pets” building. Or clearing off beer cans, rum bottles and cigarette butts from the front porch. Or returning miss-delivered mail. Shouldn’t the mindset be something closer to “how do my actions affect others” rather than “me me me me me me”?

Thanks - I might just have to take you up on that offer. I don’t think the property owner would object if I were to add one or two as I’m sure it will save him money in the long run.

Days like this make me miss Los Angeles, where year ‘round temperature control could be handled by opening or closing a couple of windows. For several years I didn’t even have the pilot light on the heater lit nor did I use the air conditioning.

Certainly one advantage of my third floor apartment is that I still have yet to turn the heat on at all this season. Sure there have been days that were in the 10s-20s overnight but the temp on the thermostat has not dropped below 68 with the heat off. Thanks to the people on lower floors heating my apartment! Of course the trade-off is that on 75 degree days its easily 85 degrees in my apartment if I dont run the AC.

Yes, I can see that this is a bigger problem. Some of these sound like things you might want to mention to a landlord or building superintendent or something.

I used to wake up to my roomate thawing the water meter pumpkin with a heat gun in the dead of winter. (Winnipeg is cold if you haven’t heard)|

I’ve had trouble here with animals digging around my house to get into the crawl space. I find out they’ve made a hole big enough for a draft when the pipes freeze down there. Apparently a previous owner tried to solve this by pouring concrete around 2/3 of the house as a sort of sidewalk but now they just dig under that instead.

Steel, actually. Will they still work? They’re pretty light weight.

Yeah, no problem. I think I have some self tappers that’ll make it happen. If not a stop by Home Depot can fix it. We may need a crown bolt to go all the way through. I’ll throw these in the back of the car.

Sweet! Thanks again. I’m sure the property owner will appreciate it as well.
